10 Tips for a Fun Family Vacation with your Teens and Tweens!

Summer is here, and people are finally traveling again! Just because your kids are getting older doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy an awesome family vacation! We have been traveling with our kids since they were babies. And mostly in our car. Our kids are 10 and 15 now, and honestly traveling with them just gets easier and better.

Here are some tips for traveling with teens and tweens to ensure your entire family has a fun and memorable trip. And with less stress!

Get their input on Destinations
Know what your children like. Get their input on what they would like to do and where they would like to go. You may have to compromise to make the whole family happy, but in the end, they are happier if their opinion counts. When you decide where you are going, ask them to research the places they’d like to see and the things they’d like to do.

Travel Games
Uno has always been a favorite for our children even as they get older. And it plays well in the car!  The other one that they have fun with is Loaded Questions On the Go travel game for kids. It’s full of fun questions like, “What super power is not very super?” and, “Whose voice can you best imitate?”  So much fun!

Don’t plan to sightsee the day of arrival.
Teens just want to get settled in when you arrive at your vacation destination. Keep in mind that the further the distance you’ve traveled and the bigger the difference in time zones, the longer it will take to get over jet lag. Plan an easy activity for your first full day of vacation. Get something to eat, walk around a bit, and maybe take a dip in the hotel swimming pool.

Feed Them Well
Teens are all about food. I can barely get enough food into them their bodies are changing so fast. Any sort of trip, tour or vacation with huge mountains of food is a winner with my teens.

Allow some time on technology
Of course you want them to be present and enjoy the vacation you are spending lots of money on!  But times are different then when we were kids and they need their online connections, their gaming, YouTubing, streaming and memes. They love them. Make sure your hotel or Air BNB guest house has free, unlimited wifi for multiple devices.
Technology can be a great distraction during long flights or drives, too.

Let Them Sleep
Teens need more sleep than we as adults do. That doesn’t mean they can’t get up early if they have to, but they do need sleep. Tired teenagers are cranky teenagers!

Listening to guides in a big group is b-o-r-i-n-g.
Typically, teens don’t like big tours geared toward grown-ups. Instead, choose tours that are designed for kids their ages. Teens often prefer active tours on bicycles or Segways. Guides-on-tape and scavenger hunts are also a good idea for independent-minded tweens and teens.

Let teens wander into offbeat stores or museums.
Big kids may have interest in wacky shops and attractions that aren’t appealing to parents. That’s okay. You can choose to accompany them or sit outside and rest your feet while they wander. Which gives us older parents a chance to rest!!

Give Them Free Time
Much as we’ve enjoyed trips and tours where we’ve all been busy all day every day, a little downtime is good for them too. Mine sleep a lot, read a lot or check-in with the online world. Movies are good too.

Encourage kids to document their travels.
Most kids have smartphones with cameras now. Teens and tweens may want to take photos or create videos to share with their friends via social media. Encourage them by agreeing to pause so they can get the best shot and praising their pics.

I hope this helps you have a wonderful family vacation this summer!  We all need it!

Do you need more energy?!

Do you need more energy?!
May. It is even busier than December for those of us that have school age children. I am wiped out and we are only halfway through!

But it gave me an idea for a blog post today, because I know ALL the women out there could use more energy. We tend to push ourselves way too hard!

Here are some ways to increase our energy levels, because surprisingly, there are some simple things we can do!

  • Control your stress. Yea, I know. It has been a HARD year for that. But there are things that can help! Talk to a friend. Try meditation or yoga. Even taking a break and watching your favorite Netflix show. Stress causes all kinds of issues, so working on that is important!
  • Lighten your load. Learn to say no to those things you don’t really have time for. Really look at that to do list and see what is absolutely necessary. And remember, you can always ask for help. I know I am bad about that!

  • Exercise. Doing even a little exercise will help you sleep better, thus giving you more energy the next day. And exercising can lead to higher brain dopamine levels, which helps elevate mood. And our kids and spouses appreciate that!

  • Eat for energy. Foods such as whole grains, high-fiber vegetables, nuts, and healthy oils such as olive oil. That brownie is yummy, but will only give you a quick sugar high. Not even long enough to fold that huge pile of laundry!!

  • Caffeine. A cup of coffee or other caffeine CAN help with alertness. But be careful, drinking it too late in the day, especially if you have problems sleeping.

  • Drink water!  One of the first signs that your body needs water is fatigue. Get the water in!

  • And last but not least – if you are an oiler, Ningxia Red. So much goodness. Not a juice, but a puree of the wolfberry + oils. You get all the nutrients that makes it easier for our body to use. And all the antioxidants to get rid of the yucky built up stuff.

Bottom line. If we put enough good things in our body to make it where our body can get rid of the bad things that are making us tired, then we can get that energy back. Even if we are tired mama’s. Even if we are older.
I hope this helps!  Happy May!

A lot of homework and so little focus!

I don’t know about you guys with your kiddos, but my sweet 4th grade boy is a hot mess with his focus.

My title says a lot of homework, but really it is not SO MUCH. It just seems to take him SO LONG. And then he wants to take a break after two or three math problems. It seriously is so frustrating. And the thing that makes it harder is that he is so smart!  His grades have always been great. We have tried a variety of things, including music while he is working. The music helps sometimes but not consistently.

Then we had a big breakthrough the other day. I ordered a new oil called Kid Power. Mostly because I heard it smells like an orange + vanilla ice cream cone. So I had to have it lol! Plus it is supposed to help with confidence and elevates mood. I think part of his problem is that he also gets overwhelmed. So. I combined the Kid Power with Geneyus, which is for focus and concentration. And BOOM. Moving through that homework!  He asks for it now. And at our parent/teacher conference his teacher asked about it. Told me he was welcome to bring it and use it at school.

For all those parents out there that are on the homework struggle bus – I see you. I hear your frustration. I hope this blesses and helps you!

And for my friends out there with no kids and also struggle with focus  - I use the kids oils too!

Bringing in the Houseplants and hoping I won't kill them!!

One of my goals for this year was to add some houseplants to the house. Bring more cozy in. So while it is April and I am starting a bit late, it is time!

We have a smaller home and the light in the house has never been all that great. Lots of indirect sunlight. I was so happy to find out I can still have beautiful REAL plants in my house.

Indirect lighting typically refers to any area of your home where sunlight passes through a medium, such as a window shade before reaching a plant. Plants that grow in indirect lighting should be placed in rooms with windows that get sunlight, but in an area that's away from the windows so they are never in the path of direct light.

After doing some research I found five houseplants that will take indirect light well.

Monstera Deliciosa

Commonly referred to as the "Swiss cheese plant," Monstera deliciosa is known for having large leaves with holes that allow dappled sunlight to shine through to the lower leaves. I just got this one and I am so happy!

Chlorophytum Comosum

This is also known as a “Spider” or “Airplane” plant. It is a beautiful decorative houseplant.

Zamioculcas Zamiifolia

Better known as the "ZZ" plant, they are a great way to add foliage to an area of your home that doesn't receive a lot of sunlight. I also got this one!

Aglaonema

This one comes in pink, red, cream, white and gold and besides doing well in low light they are good for those that forget to water as often as they should!! That might be my next one! :)

Fittonias

Popularly known as the "nerve" plant due to its delicately veined, dark green leaves. They are cute and small and would be good tucked into a small grouping to shield it from too much light.

Here is a easy cleaning tip. Add a few drops of lemon oil to cool soapy water. Use a damp cloth to gently wipe leaves and remove dust from plants. With my dogs, my house gets super dusty and I am happy to have this tip!

Happy planting!

Tips for Spring Cleaning!

Tips for Spring Cleaning!
Spring cleaning is something most of us have to get in the mood for. I love having a clean house (for a few days anyway!!) and love opening all the windows, which I use as motivation for my annual deep clean.

I find that turning on a good play list always helps me. Are there specific songs that get you in the mood to clean?  I listen to a lot of either classic rock or 90s rap!

Here are five tips to help you get that spring cleaning done easier!

1. Make a schedule and figure out which areas of your home could use the most work. Those are the best places to start.

2. Before tackling the cleaning, take the time to de-clutter! Spring cleaning is a perfect opportunity to get rid of the “stuff” you can live without. Removing excess clutter will make it easier to clean. If you don’t love it, toss it. Donate usable items to local shelters.

3. Always work from the top to bottom. The last thing you want to do is re-vacuum because of the dust that came off your ceiling fan.

4. Don't forget to wipe down walls and windows. These are often overlooked, but dust and grime can settle on those surfaces too.

5. Diffuse lemon! Lemon is refreshing and invigorating, making it the perfect scent to accompany your spring cleaning.

My absolute favorite cleaner is Thieves cleaner. I can literally clean my entire house with it. Floors, counters, toilets, bathrooms, kitchens, ALL THE THINGS. I use Thieves because it is plant based. No toxins. Cleans well. Smells awesome!!

I stopped using common cleaners because I got tired of coughing in my windowless bathroom. And then I found that out that common cleaners can cause or contribute to:

Asthma
Irritation to eyes & airways
Headaches
Dizziness
Poisoning
Bronchitis
Skin irritation
Hormone imbalances
and others….

Then the other reason I use Thieves?!  It is CHEAP. Diluted 1:30, one bottle of Thieves Household Cleaner will make for than 28 – 450 ml bottles of cleaner. That is less than $1 a bottle!

You don’t have to use my cleaner!  But a little tip - how do you keep your home clean without all the hazardous stuff?  Simplest way – check the labels. Products can be greenwashed, meaning they have packaging that advertises as “green” or “natural” but sneak unwelcome ingredients into their formulas.

Check out my graphic for a helpful cleaning list. Happy Spring cleaning!
